Introduction
The Shanghai Jiading Export Processing Zone (Shanghai Jiading EPZ) is located within the Jiading Industrial Zone in the north-western part of Shanghai, bordering Kunshan to the west. Kunshan is the largest county-level economy in China, with GDP in 2007 hitting RMB 115.2 billion. Situated in the Jiading District, Jiading EPZ is 30 km from the city center of Shanghai. It won the approval to be a state-level development zone in 2005 and commenced official operation in 2007. The designated area of the zone was 3 km2, with approximately 1 km2 already developed.
Shanghai Jiading District has a convenient transportation system. It is only 25 km away from the Shanghai Hongqiao Airport, Shanghai Railway Station and Shanghai Port, which is China's busiest port in terms of cargo traffic and container traffic. The Shanghai Pudong International Airport, which was the largest airport in China in terms of cargo throughput in 2007, is just 75 km away. The Shanghai-Nanjing Highway, the Shanghai-Jiading Highway, the 204 National Highway and the 312 National Highway all travel through the district, connecting it with other major cities in the Yangtze River Delta.
Investment Climate
Shanghai Jiading EPZ was the sixth export-processing zone to be constructed in Shanghai. It mainly encourages investments in electronic components, automobile parts, natural medicines, bio-pharmaceuticals, precision machinery and new materials industries.
In a promotional meeting held by the Jiading local government in Shanghai in 2005, Shanghai Jiading EPZ attracted twenty-three foreign-funded projects, with investments totaling US$950 million. Meanwhile, it has attracted ten domestic-invested projects, with investment hitting RMB 503 million.
Johnson Health Tech from Taiwan and Shanghai Guanqun Sports Equipment have agreed to invest US$60 million and US$20 million respectively into sports equipment-producing lines in the export-processing zone. The factory of Johnson Health will cover an area of over 26,000 m2. The initial stage of the factory has already been completed.
