Shanghai to issue travel coupons worth RMB 900 mln

Apr. 28, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Shanghai will issue travel coupons worth RMB 900 million to local residents and tourists in Shanghai, Jiangsu Province and Zhejiang Province, source reported.

A total of 310,000 pamphlets of consumption coupons will be issued by the Pudong New District during the Apr. 28~30 period. Tourists with these coupons can enjoy discounts up to 80% at 12 scenic spots, 32 restaurants, 29 hotels and nine travel agencies in the district between May to August. Each pamphlet can save about RMB 3,000.

It is estimated that the coupon issuance will bring more than RMB 5 billion in domestic consumption without government financial input at the beginning as the discounts in the coupons are provided by the tourism-related enterprises.

In the first quarter of 2009, Pudong New District saw a 20% drop in travel revenue, and the local government hopes to stimulate local tourism via the travel coupon issuance.
