Apr. 24, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Taiwan's unemployment rate hit a record high of 5.8% in March, reflecting a 0.06% increase from February, according to statistics released by the local government. Adjusted for the time of year, the rate was still as high as 5.72%, exceeding February's record level of 5.63%. The number of jobless people increased by 6,000 to 630,000 last month. Because some industries seem to have reached the bottom and because the government has taken measures to promote employment, the unemployment rate is thought to have stabilized in March, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said. Local official Chen Tain-jy said in March that Taiwan's overall jobless situation would not be improved until the final quarter of this year.
