Apr. 22, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Chinese refined copper imports surged 138% in March from a year earlier to 296,843 tons, according to the statistics released by China's General Administration of Customs (GAC) on Wednesday. Last month, China imported 461,620 tons of copper concentrates, up 11% year on year, said the GAC. In the first quarter of this year, the nation's refined copper imports totaled 748,281, up 92% year on year, while its imports of copper concentrates edged up 3.2% to 1.4 million tons. In the first three months of this year, the refined copper imports from China's three major source countries, Chile, Japan and South Korea, were 290,126 tons, 136,434 tons and 32,361 tons, up 41%, 150.78% and 72.01% from a year earlier, respectively.
