Mar. 30, 2009 (China Knowledge) - Nasdaq-listed Spreadtrum Communications Inc<SPRD>, a semiconductor company in China, last week announced it had been selected by Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, South Korea's top electronics manufacturer, to provide cell phone chips, sources reported. Spreadtrum Communications' QS520 GSM/GPRS and QS1001 EDGE transceivers have been incorporated into specifications for new Samsung cell phones that will be sold globally. Leo Li, Spreadtrum's president & CEO, said the company will cooperate with Samsung to produce cell phones and hopes to realize a smooth growth in chip supply. Spreadtrum Communications is the biggest cell phone IC provider in mainland China. It is the main silicon wafer OEM manufacturer of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC).
