Nike closes shoe plant in China

Published: 24 Mar 2009 19:17:08 PST

Mar. 25, 2009 (China Knowledge) - U.S. sportswear giant Nike Inc will close its shoe plant in Taicang, Jiangsu Province, sources reported, citing Zhu Jinqian, spokesperson of Nike China, as saying.

Nike will move the shoe manufacturing business to other Asian countries, said Zhu, adding that the 1,400 employees in the Taicang plant will be relocated to Nike's plant in Fujian.

Currently, Nike has 144 contract plants in China, and the 13-year-old Taicang plant, managed by Taiwan-based Feng Tay Enterprises Co, is the only one that manufactures footwear for Nike in the country.

Last week, the Oregon-based company has realigned its global business into six geographical areas, and made China its own region considering the significant sales growth Nike has achieved in the country during the past few years.
