Dec. 29, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Skoda Auto, under the control of Volkswagen AG, announced that it has launched its Skoda Fabia sub-compact car in the Chinese market, the automaker's second car model in the country after Skoda Octavia. The move suggests Skoda's intention to expand its presence in China, the world's second-biggest auto market, sources reported. Industry analysts indicate launching the new vehicle model in China will help Volkswagen to boost its market share in China and combat the economic downturn worldwide. The Skoda Fabia, with 1.4L or 1.6L engine, is produced by Shanghai Volkswagen Automobile Co Ltd. The new car will be sold at prices ranging from RMB 81,900 to RMB 117,900 per unit. The local production of the Fabia in China shows that Skoda has grown at top speed in the emerging market, said Fred Kappler, Skoda's board member for sales and marketing. The release of Fabia will expand Skoda's product portfolio in China and enhance its brand awareness, said Zhang Hailiang, sales and marketing executive director of Shanghai Volkswagen.
