Dec. 12, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Advanced Micro Devices Inc (AMD), the world's second largest computer chip vendor, announced that it has no plan to build a 12-inch chip foundry in Jinan, the capital city of China's Shandong Province. The clarification statement came after reports that the U.S company is mulling setting up a plant in mainland China, in a bid to compete with Intel Corp's new plant in Dalian. Some local semiconductor makers indicated AMD had visited Jinan for a feasibility study of setting up a plant in the city. However, spokesman for AMD public relations explain that it is just a rumor and AMD will make no comment on the report. Last week, AMD disclosed that it has inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on strategic cooperation in integrate circuit industry development with Shandong province. However, the MOU didn't involve manufacturing segment. In order to enhance its presence in the Chinese market in server computer and high-end personal computer sectors, AMD unveiled its latest quad-core processor with a code name "Shanghai" in the city last week, the first computer chip with a name of a Chinese city, according to China Knowledge's earlier report.
