Chinese stocks end mixed on Thu

Nov. 20, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Chinese stocks ended mixed on Thursday after Wall Street rout overnight.
 
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A shares and B shares on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, declined 1.67%, or 33.71 points, to 1983.76 points after fluctuating between 2030.87 and 1956.73 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index on the smaller Shenzhen Stock Exchange edged up 0.25%, or 16.89 points, to 6696.83 points, after touching an intraday low of 6534.85 points.

Gainers in the Shanghai market outnumbered decliners by 412 to 385, while 57 were unchanged. Aggregated turnover on the two bourses was RMB 129.94 billion.

China Life Insurance Co<601628><2628><LFC>, the country's largest life insurance company, lost 3.98% to RMB 20.24, while its smaller rival Ping An Insurance (Group) Co<601318><2318> dived 5.74% to RMB 24.13.

Market heavy weight PetroChina<601857><857><PTR>, the nation's top oil producer, edged down 2.60% to close at RMB 11.08, while Asia's largest oil refiner Sinopec<600028><386><SNP> added 0.60% to close at RMB 8.42.

CITIC Securities Co. Ltd<600030>, the country's most profitable brokerage, fell 2.03% to RMB 19.76. Changjiang Securities Co. Ltd<000783> gave up 2.38% to settle at RMB 11.47. Guoyuan Securities Co. Ltd<000728> lost 1.07% to close at RMB 12.00. Haitong Securities Co. Ltd<600837>, a Shanghai-based brokerage, declined 4.86% to RMB 13.31.

China Vanke Co Ltd<000002><200002>, the country's largest publicly traded residential properties developer, advanced 2.00% to RMB 6.63. Gemdale Corp<600383>, one of the largest property developers in China, gained 2.29% to close at RMB 6.71. COFCO Property (Group) Co. Ltd<000031> advanced 3.95% to RMB 6.05.

Air China Ltd<601111><753>, the largest carrier in the country by market value, shrank 2.83% to RMB 4.47. China Eastern Airlines<600115><670><CEA>, the country's third-largest carrier, rose 0.86% to RMB 4.70. China Southern Airlines Co<600029><1055><ZNH>, the largest airline by fleet size in the country, skidded 4.00% to RMB 3.84.
