Nov. 19, 2008 (China Knowledge) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has set up its first China office in Beijing, aiming at helping check the safety of exports headed to America, China Daily reported.

FDA will open three offices in China this week, according to the newspaper report. In addition to the Beijing office, FDA will launch two more in Guangzhou and Shanghai respectively.

The new FDA offices will help further enhance food safety for both American and Chinese consumers, said Mike Leavitt, secretary of the office of U.S. Health and Human Services (HHS).

13 employees will be assigned to work in the FDA offices in China, said Leavitt, without giving what their role would be.

Leavitt said he plans to attend two workshops conducted by the U.S. and Chinese governments during his visit to Beijing.
