Nov. 17, 2008 (China Knowledge) - Qualcomm Inc and Beijing Peking University Unity Microsystems Technology Co. Ltd (PKUnity), a China-based high-tech enterprise, jointly announced that they have launched the third phase of the Connected Computer Classroom program. The program, supported by Qualcomm's global Wireless Reach initiative, is designed to further build up IT infrastructure and narrow the digital divide for local primary and secondary schools that lack wireless broadband access. Those schools will be provided with wireless Internet capability through computers using CDMA2000 1X wireless telecommunication technology and PKUnity's innovative home-grown CPU technology, sources reported. PKUnity is very glad to cooperate with Qualcomm to help boost IT education development in China, said Xu Cheng, chairman of PKUnity, adding that both sides will focus on provision of advanced multimedia network computers and wireless Internet access for teachers and students in underdeveloped areas. Irwin Mark Jacobs, chairman of Qualcomm said the Connected Computer Classroom Program is an important element of Qualcomm's Wireless Reach initiative and the expansion of the project marks an important step in realizing Qualcomm's commitment to China.
