President Lee Myung-bak has asked South Korea's ruling party to step up efforts to approve the country's free trade agreement with the U.S. at an earlier date, the Yonhap news agency reported Monday, citing unnamed party officials.
The deal was signed in June 2007 but requires approval from the legislatures of both countries, the South Korean news agency said.
It said the deal has languished in political limbo in South Korea, with little chance of being ratified this year.
According to officials from the ruling Grand National Party, Lee has asked Hong Joon-pyo, the party's floor leader, to redouble efforts to pass the bill before U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's inauguration on Jan. 20, 2009.
