Empowering Vietnamese Exporters to Gain in International Trade

Hanoi, June 3, 2009 – As the world faces its worst economic crisis since the great depression, Vietnam’s economy is facing unprecedented challenges, particularly in the areas of production and exports. The export turnover for the first five months of 2009 fell sharply compared to the same period last year, product categories such as rubber (-49%), crude oil (-44%), electric wire and cable (-41%) and pottery (-24%) are being hit hard. Only tea, rice, cassava and gemstones have seen positive growth rates (Source: Vietnam General Statistics Office).

As global demand falters, how can Vietnamese companies export products at the lowest cost for the highest return? This is an urgent issue for many local exporters, of which 90 percent are small and medium–size enterprises (SMEs).
