KUALA LUMPUR, May 15 (Reuters) - Malaysia's 2008 rice imports are likely to climb 28.6 percent to 900,000 tonnes from an annual average of 700,000 tonnes, Agriculture Minister Mustapa Mohamed said on Thursday.
The minister also said Malaysia is also looking at a proposal to buy additional 300,000 tonnes this year on top of the 900,000 tonnes.
Malaysia has bought 200,000 tonnes of Thai rice and is in talks to secure another 300,000 tonnes, a Thai official said on Tuesday, amid a global rush to lock in supplies for the dwindling food staple.
